According to most scientists, there is no absolute material proof that the soul exists or that reincarnation exists. To answer this question, we have little more than controversial interpretations of ancient religious scriptures, NDE testimonies, and mystical messages.
The answer appears to be no, reincarnation does not trap a soul into an eternal cycle of lifetimes. Reincarnation is only one of the tools a soul can use for spiritual growth. The soul decides whether or not to live a physical lifetime, how many times it will reincarnate, and what form or forms of physical life it will incarnate as. The soul has free will. Karma does not make those decisions.
Most souls reside in the non-material realm that Christians call Heaven, Muslims call Paradise, and many near-death experiencers call Home. If a soul prefers, the soul can grow spiritually without ever leaving Home. Nevertheless, many souls choose to live one or more physical lifetimes, and so they incarnate or later reincarnate. They do this to gain a different spiritual experience, to grow spiritually, or to assist other incarnated souls to grow spiritually. When a soul incarnates as a physical being, for example as a human being, the soul leaves Home to live somewhere physical, such as on Earth. But Earth is not Home. Sooner or later, all souls return Home.
Spiritual growth is important for several reasons. Some are human reasons, such as improving your mental health, but some are supernatural reasons.
In many NDEs in which the experiencer meets a brilliant light and believes it to be God, the experiencer feels so much Divine love and peace that the person later remembers wanting to merge with that light—for eternity. The person’s identity would cease to exist, but if the identity is only the ego, losing that would be a cleansing, a purification. Buddhism has a concept called nirvana, which means no longer having a separate self because one’s identity is annihilated. It means non-existence, but only because it is not physical existence. Other religions have similar concepts of “death of the ego” or “returning to Source,” which means a final return to God. This option of merging with God forever is available to every soul, but only after the soul fully understands everything that it needs to know about God. That vast knowledge is beyond human conception, but the soul learns it and also undergoes moral cleansing and purification.
Now, since your soul is currently living a human lifetime, you need not worry about these grand metaphysical concepts. Nevertheless, you are making spiritual progress because you are living a human lifetime. Earth is a place where souls accelerate their spiritual progress. That is why living a lifetime on Earth is so difficult.
There are other options available to souls. Choosing one option does not preclude choosing another option later. For example, a very experienced and wise soul can create another universe, or even several. Very different from this Universe, a universe created by a soul has different natural laws. That universe also lacks sentient life forms because the soul is not ready to be God. Later, operating in our Universe but under Divine guidance, the soul may create a planet or a star system. Again, because your soul is now living a human lifetime, you need not worry about how difficult this is.
Another option is to merely rest in the afterlife for as long as you want, including in a world that looks like Earth but is more wonderful, even magical. If you are content with that choice, then God is content with your choice. Indeed, that option is what most humans imagine the afterlife to be: a place like Earth but better.
With so many wonderful options, you might be eager to get Home. Instead of feeling eager, however, feel reassured. You need not worry about death. You need to embrace life! You are living a human lifetime, so focus on that. You may believe that an afterlife exists, but it may not. Everything supernatural discussed here may not exist. But you do exist as a human being, and that should be enough for now.
